Ground squirrels are small rodents, typically 6-12 inches long, with a slender body and short, bushy tail. They have distinctive stripes or spots on their fur, often with a reddish-brown or grayish coloration. Their ears are small and rounded, and they have strong claws for digging.

Look for numerous burrow openings in your yard, often near foundations, decks, or sheds. You might observe ground squirrels actively foraging for food, especially around bird feeders, gardens, and garbage cans. Damage to landscaping, such as gnawed roots or upturned soil, can also indicate their presence.
