Eastern subterranean termites are creamy-white to dark brown, about 1/8 inch long. Workers are pale and soft-bodied, while soldiers have large brown heads with prominent mandibles. Swarmers (reproductives) are dark brown to black with two pairs of equal-length wings that they shed after mating flights, typically in spring.

Look for mud tubes running along foundation walls, floor joists, or support piers -- these pencil-width tunnels are the most reliable sign. You may also notice hollow-sounding wood, bubbling or peeling paint, or piles of discarded wings near windows and doors during spring swarm season. Damaged wood has a layered, honeycomb appearance along the grain.

Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your foundation. Fix leaky faucets and AC units that create moisture near the structure – common problems in Myrtle Beach homes. Store firewood at least 20 feet from the house and 5 inches off the ground. Ensure gutters and downspouts direct water away from the foundation to prevent moisture buildup near the home's perimeter in our sandy SC soil.

Subterranean termites thrive in the sandy soils and humid subtropical climate of Myrtle Beach. They live in underground colonies that can contain up to one million members. They require moisture and soil contact, building mud tubes to travel between their colony and wood food sources. Along the Grand Strand, they are active nearly year-round due to the warm weather and readily available moisture in areas near salt marshes and tidal creeks.
