Termites
Reticulitermes flavipes
insectsHow to Identify
Eastern subterranean termites are creamy-white to dark brown, about 1/8 inch long. Workers are pale and soft-bodied, while soldiers have large brown heads with prominent mandibles. Swarmers (reproductives) are dark brown to black with two pairs of equal-length wings that they shed after mating flights, typically in spring.
Signs of Infestation
Look for mud tubes running along foundation walls, floor joists, or support piers -- these pencil-width tunnels are the most reliable sign. You may also notice hollow-sounding wood, bubbling or peeling paint, or piles of discarded wings near windows and doors during spring swarm season. Damaged wood has a layered, honeycomb appearance along the grain.
Health Risks
Termites themselves don't bite or directly threaten human health, but their activity can compromise the structural integrity of your Myrtle Beach home, leading to costly repairs. In severe cases, termite damage can weaken load-bearing structures. Termite frass and colony debris can aggravate allergies and asthma in sensitive individuals, especially in coastal SC homes with high humidity.
Our Treatment Method
MBPC offers both liquid barrier treatments (Termidor SC) and in-ground baiting systems to protect your Grand Strand property. For active infestations, we recommend a liquid barrier applied around the full perimeter of the foundation. For prevention or ongoing monitoring, a baiting system with quarterly inspections by our licensed technicians is effective. Both options can be paired with our Termite Bond for long-term protection against these destructive pests in the Myrtle Beach area.
Prevention Tips
Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your foundation. Fix leaky faucets and AC units that create moisture near the structure – common problems in Myrtle Beach homes. Store firewood at least 20 feet from the house and 5 inches off the ground. Ensure gutters and downspouts direct water away from the foundation to prevent moisture buildup near the home's perimeter in our sandy SC soil.
Habitat
Subterranean termites thrive in the sandy soils and humid subtropical climate of Myrtle Beach. They live in underground colonies that can contain up to one million members. They require moisture and soil contact, building mud tubes to travel between their colony and wood food sources. Along the Grand Strand, they are active nearly year-round due to the warm weather and readily available moisture in areas near salt marshes and tidal creeks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Termites
Termite swarmers have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and a broad waist. Flying ants have elbowed antennae, unequal wings, and a pinched waist. If you find discarded wings near windows in spring in your Myrtle Beach home, call MBPC for an inspection immediately.
Termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage annually in the U.S. A mature colony can consume about one foot of a 2x4 board per year. Damage is often hidden inside walls and may go undetected for years, which is why regular inspections are crucial for Grand Strand homes.
A termite bond from MBPC provides ongoing protection through annual inspections and treatment warranties. It is especially valuable for home resale — most buyers and lenders in the Southeast, including SC, require a current termite letter.
DIY termite treatments are not recommended in Myrtle Beach. Over-the-counter products cannot reach subterranean colonies, and improper treatment can scatter the colony and worsen the problem. Professional liquid barrier or baiting systems, like those used by MBPC, are the only reliable methods for our local termite species.
